Poem in Thanks

I won't pretend to be a well read patron of poetry, but I will admit that I'd very much like to be. I wouldn't even mind having a few ditties committed to memory, so when I'm old, I'll have the equivilent of Sam McGee that my grandfather was famous, among us, for reciting.

Poem in Thanks
Thomas Lex

Lord Whoever, thank you for this air
I'm about to in- and exhale, this hutch
in the woods, the wood for fire,
the light--both lamp and the natural stuff
of leaf-back, fern and wing
For the piano, the shovel
for ashes, the moth-gnawed
blankets, the stone-cold water
stone-cold: thank you.
Thank you, Lord, coming for
to carry me here -- where I'll gnash
it out, Lord, where I'll calm
and work, Lord, thank you
for the goddamn birds singing!

Susie, you know I absolutely love poetry. I particularly like Ginsberg and other Beats, Langston Hughes, Maxine Kumin, Chas. Bukowski, Dylan Thomas, and some Robert Frost. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is in my top three of poems (tied for first?), and it reminds me of beautiful, snowy places like MN & WV & Western NC. Carl Sandburg is great, Killers is my fave of his ("Happiness" and "And They Obey" are awesome, too). I have sent you others that are top ten (i.e., the C.B. Trail). I can send you some faves via email.

You seem to have recaptured your joie de vivre! Yay!

Try some Billy Collins. And Ogden Nash is an old time satirist/humorist. Garrison Keillor has a wonderful collection entitled Good Poems. It is a lovely tome and boasts a brief bio of the poets whose work is included. There is nothing like a poem. I commend you for picking one to commit to memory. Your children/grandchildren, nieces/nephews will be enriched.
